By Alex Johnson. “How long should it be?” sits behind a lot of the searches that reach our essay pages, and the answers floating around online often contradict each other. So I went to the source for each one: the application, the style guide or a university career office. Each limit below says where it comes from.
Some length limits are hard rules enforced by a form that stops accepting text. Others are conventions that readers expect. Knowing which is which matters: going over the Common App limit is impossible, while a two-page cover letter is allowed but works against you.
⚡ Quick answer: Common App essay: 250–650 words. UC personal insight questions: up to 350 words each. AMCAS personal comments: up to 5,300 characters with spaces. APA abstract: up to 250 words. Cover letter: under one page. Elevator pitch: 30–60 seconds, about 65–130 words. Pick one below and paste your draft to check it.

How long should a college essay be?
Common App personal essay: 250 to 650 words
The Common App has used a 650-word maximum since the 2013–14 application, when it raised the limit from 500 words and set a 250-word minimum below which the system will not accept an essay. The range still applies for 2026–27. The separate Additional information question was cut from 650 words to 300 for 2025–26.
UC personal insight questions: 350 words each
University of California applicants choose 4 of 8 questions and answer each in up to 350 words. UC states that all questions are weighted equally, so there is no advantage in choosing a particular one. Four answers of 350 words make 1,400 words in all, more than twice the Common App essay, so plan the set together rather than one answer at a time.
Supplemental essays
Each college sets its own supplemental limits, and they vary from prompt to prompt. The prompt in the application is the only reliable source. Pick “Custom limit” in the checker to enter one.
How long is the AMCAS personal statement?
The AMCAS personal comments essay for medical school allows up to 5,300 characters, and the AAMC’s application workbook for the 2027 cycle says all its character counts include letters and spaces. Characters are a stricter measure than words because long words eat more of the limit.
For typical prose, 5,300 characters comes to roughly 900 words, based on the average English word length of 4.79 letters plus a space between words. Medical and scientific vocabulary runs longer, so a personal statement full of it fits fewer. Check your actual draft in the checker, or convert between the two with the words to characters converter.
How long is an abstract?
APA Style asks writers to limit an abstract to 250 words, and notes that academic journals typically set a similar ceiling. The same guide adds that some instructors and journals have their own requirements, so a journal’s author guidelines or your assignment sheet takes priority. Abstracts are usually counted separately from the main word count of a paper.
How long should a cover letter be?
Northeastern University’s career guide says a cover letter generally has three or four paragraphs and is always less than a page, with an exception for very experienced candidates applying for senior roles. There is no word limit as such; the page is the limit. A single-spaced page holds about 500 words of plain text, and a letter’s header, greeting and signature take a share of that, which is why the checker’s cover letter setting uses 400 words as a working maximum. That figure is our estimate, not a rule.
How long is an elevator pitch?
Michigan State University’s career services describe an elevator pitch as about 30 to 60 seconds. At a comfortable speaking pace of 130 words per minute, that is roughly 65 to 130 words, so the checker measures a pitch in speaking time rather than words. For any other timed talk, the speech length calculator converts between minutes and words at slow, average and fast paces.
Words, characters and how forms count them
Word counters disagree at the edges. A hyphenated word like “well-known” counts as one word in some counters and two in others, and numbers, initials and symbols are handled differently from one counter to the next. Character limits have their own trap: some forms count line breaks and some don’t. If your draft is within a word or two of a hard limit, trust the counter in the form you are submitting to.
Writing to a limit
- Draft first, then cut. Get the whole argument down, then trim to the limit, rather than counting words from the first sentence.
- Cut whole sentences before single words. Removing one sentence that repeats an earlier point saves more than trimming “very” and “really” across the essay.
- Use the time you have. The writing time calculator estimates how long a draft of a given length will take, and the readability checker shows which long sentences to split during editing.
