By Alex Johnson. People who land on our essay pages keep asking the same planning question: if the assignment is 1,000 words, how long will it actually take? Most answers online are guesses, so this calculator starts from measured writing speeds and lets you swap in your own.
Typing speed tests make writing look fast. The average typist copies text at about 52 words per minute, which would put a 1,000-word essay at 20 minutes. Nobody writes an essay that way, because composing means stopping to think, rereading the last sentence and deleting half of it. Measured drafting speeds are about a third of copying speed.
⚡ Quick answer: At the pace students averaged in a timed essay study, a first draft of 500 words takes about 30 minutes to type and 1,000 words takes about 1 hour. A 2,000-word essay takes about 2 hours of drafting. By hand, add roughly a quarter. Research and editing come on top of these figures.

The table uses the calculator’s two presets. “Typed + edit” adds one read-through of the finished draft at average reading speed.
| Words | Typed | By hand | Typed + edit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 15 min | 19 min | 16 min |
| 500 | 30 min | 40 min | 30 min |
| 750 | 45 min | 1 hr | 50 min |
| 1,000 | 1 hr | 1 hr 15 min | 1 hr 5 min |
| 1,500 | 1 hr 30 min | 1 hr 55 min | 1 hr 35 min |
| 2,000 | 2 hr | 2 hr 35 min | 2 hr 10 min |
| 2,500 | 2 hr 30 min | 3 hr 10 min | 2 hr 40 min |
| 3,000 | 3 hr | 3 hr 50 min | 3 hr 15 min |
| 5,000 | 5 hr 5 min | 6 hr 25 min | 5 hr 25 min |
These are times for writing that you already know what to say. If the assignment needs reading, note-taking or sources, that work usually takes longer than the drafting itself.
Where the 16.5 words per minute figure comes from
In a 2016 study presented at the International Conference on Educational Data Mining, Laura Allen and colleagues at Arizona State University logged the keystrokes of 126 undergraduates writing a persuasive essay on a computer. Everyone had 25 minutes and had to keep working until the time ran out. The essays averaged 412 words, which works out to about 16.5 words per minute, including the time spent planning in a scratch pad.
The spread was wide. The shortest essay in the study ran 47 words and the longest 980, so some students drafted at under 2 words per minute and others at nearly 40. That is why the calculator lets you change the pace, or measure your own.
Typing speed vs writing speed
The 52 words per minute figure comes from a 2018 study by researchers at Aalto University and the University of Cambridge, who analyzed 136 million keystrokes from about 168,000 volunteers taking an online typing test. It measures how fast people copy a sentence they can see. Composing has no sentence to copy, so the same person drafts at a fraction of their test speed.
Handwriting is slower again. Adults copy text by hand at an average of 68 letters per minute, about 13 words per minute, with a range of roughly 5 to 20. Because that is a copying speed, it is a ceiling for handwritten drafts rather than a typical pace. Use the handwriting preset for in-class essays and exams, and expect to need the full time.
Planning, research and editing time
Drafting is the part of writing that is easiest to measure, and often the smallest part. A short reflection may need five minutes of planning. A research essay can need several hours of reading before the first sentence. The calculator leaves that box at zero so you can enter your own estimate.
Editing has a hard minimum: you have to read the draft. At an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute, one pass through 1,000 words takes about 4 minutes. A real edit, where you stop to rewrite sentences, takes longer, so treat the read-through figure as the floor. Two passes, one for structure and one for typos, is a reasonable plan for anything graded.
How to measure your own writing pace
- Press Measure my pace in the calculator
- Start typing about anything: your day, the essay topic, an argument you had. The timer starts on the first keystroke
- Keep going for at least a minute. Two or three minutes gives a steadier number
- Press Use this pace and the calculator recalculates with your words per minute
Pasting text into the box won’t work, because a pasted paragraph says nothing about how fast you write. Measure on a day you are writing normally, not when you are tired or racing.
Turning the estimate into a plan
Long pieces rarely get written in one sitting. If the calculator says a 3,000-word paper needs 3 hours of drafting, three one-hour sessions on different days usually produce a better draft than one evening, and leave room for the editing pass. To see what the word count means in pages, use the words to pages calculator. For essays with a word limit, the essay word count checker shows how far you are from the target as you write.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to write 1,000 words?
About 1 hour to type a first draft at 16.5 words per minute, the pace students averaged in a timed essay study, or about 1 hour 15 minutes by hand. Research, planning and editing come on top of that.
How long does it take to write 500 words?
About 30 minutes typed, or about 40 minutes handwritten, for a first draft. A 500-word essay with research and a proper edit usually takes longer.
How long does it take to write a 2,000-word essay?
Drafting alone takes about 2 hours at 16.5 words per minute. Add your research time and at least one full read-through, which takes about 8 minutes at average reading speed.
How long does it take to write one page?
A double-spaced page is about 250 words, which takes about 15 minutes to type as a first draft. A single-spaced page holds about 500 words, so about 30 minutes.
Is typing faster than handwriting?
For copying text, by a wide margin: about 52 words per minute typed against about 13 handwritten. When you are composing, the gap shrinks, because thinking about what to say slows both down.
How do I find my own writing speed?
Use the Measure my pace box in the calculator. Type freely about anything for at least a minute and it works out your words per minute, then copies that pace into the calculator.
