By Alex Johnson. A total word count tells you whether an essay is long enough. It says nothing about whether one paragraph is carrying half the essay. I built this counter to show the length of every paragraph at once, so the lopsided ones stand out before a reader notices them.
Paragraph length is one of the first things a marker sees, before reading a single word. A wall of text signals that several ideas have been crammed together. A string of two-line paragraphs signals that none of them has been developed. Paste your draft below and the counter breaks it into paragraphs, counts the words and sentences in each one, and flags the ones that fall outside the range you choose.
⚡ Quick answer: An academic paragraph is usually 100 to 200 words, or about 5 to 10 sentences. Blog and web paragraphs are shorter, usually 40 to 100 words. Paste your text into the counter below to see where each of your paragraphs lands.
Paragraph counter
Runs in your browserHow many words should a paragraph be?
It depends on what you are writing, and the honest answer is a range rather than a number.
Academic essays: 100 to 200 words
An academic paragraph usually develops one point in four moves. A topic sentence states the point, one or two sentences introduce evidence, two to four sentences analyse it, and a closing sentence ties it back to the thesis. That structure naturally runs 100 to 200 words. Below 100 words, the analysis is usually what gets cut. Above 200, the paragraph has often drifted into a second point that deserves its own paragraph.
Web and blog writing: 40 to 100 words
On a phone, a 150-word paragraph can fill most of the screen, and readers skimming on small screens tend to skip dense blocks. Web writers keep paragraphs to two to four sentences and let headings carry the structure. If you are writing for a blog, a newsletter or a product page, switch the counter to the web preset.
Fiction and creative writing
There is no standard. A one-line paragraph can land a punch in a story, and a long descriptive paragraph can slow the pace on purpose. Use the custom range to check consistency rather than to hit a target.
How many sentences are in a paragraph?
Most academic paragraphs have 5 to 10 sentences. At an average of 15 to 20 words per sentence, five sentences gives you 75 to 100 words and ten gives you 150 to 200. A paragraph of one or two sentences is fine for a transition or a short conclusion, but if most of your body paragraphs are that short, the essay will read like a list of claims without support.
How many paragraphs for each essay length?
Divide the word count by the paragraph length you are aiming for. The table below shows both presets from the counter. A 500-word essay works out to 3 to 5 academic paragraphs, which is why the five-paragraph essay (an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion) pairs so often with a 500-word limit.
| Essay length | Academic paragraphs (100–200 words) | Web paragraphs (40–100 words) |
|---|---|---|
| 250 words | 1–3 | 3–6 |
| 500 words | 3–5 | 5–13 |
| 750 words | 4–8 | 8–19 |
| 1,000 words | 5–10 | 10–25 |
| 1,500 words | 8–15 | 15–38 |
| 2,000 words | 10–20 | 20–50 |
| 2,500 words | 13–25 | 25–63 |
| 3,000 words | 15–30 | 30–75 |
| 5,000 words | 25–50 | 50–125 |
How the counter finds paragraphs
When your text has blank lines in it, the counter treats each blank line as a paragraph break. That matches how most essays are pasted from Word or Google Docs. If there are no blank lines at all, it falls back to treating every line break as a new paragraph, and the note under the text box tells you which method it used.
Headings count as paragraphs, since the counter cannot tell a heading from a one-line paragraph. Delete headings, your title and your reference list before pasting if you want clean averages. Sentences are counted at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations such as "e.g." can add an extra sentence here and there.
What to do with a flagged paragraph
A paragraph flagged as long usually contains two ideas. Read it and find the sentence where the subject changes, often one that starts with "however", "another" or "in addition". Split the paragraph there and give the second half its own topic sentence. If the paragraph is long because of a long quotation, cut the quotation down to the part you actually analyse.
A paragraph flagged as short needs either more development or a new home. Ask what evidence supports its claim and what that evidence shows. If the answer is "nothing more to say", the paragraph probably belongs inside the one before or after it.
Frequently asked questions
How many words is a paragraph?
About 100 to 200 words in academic writing and 40 to 100 words in web writing. There is no single correct length.
How many paragraphs is 500 words?
About 3 to 5 paragraphs for an essay, or 5 to 13 paragraphs for a blog post with short web-style paragraphs.
Can a paragraph be one sentence long?
Yes, for emphasis, a transition or in journalism and fiction. In an academic essay, keep one-sentence paragraphs rare, because a body paragraph needs room for evidence and analysis.

Five: an introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. At 500 words, that is about 100 words per paragraph.
